Job Overview

The Maintenance Technician supports the physical well-being and operational functionality of our Reform Jewish congregation’s facilities. This person ensures that our synagogue buildings, grounds, and equipment are safe, clean, welcoming, and well-maintained for worship, education, community events, and administrative functions. The role requires someone dependable, proactive, and respectful of the congregation's religious and cultural practices.


Key Responsibilities*

  1. Facilities Maintenance & Repairs
    • Perform routine inspections of all buildings and grounds.
    • Address repair needs across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, and general structural systems.
    • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for specialized services.
  2. Cleaning & Housekeeping Support
    • Assist with deep cleaning and sanitation of high-traffic areas as needed.
    • Support custodial staff during peak activity periods (e.g. holidays, large events).
  3. Event Setup & Support
    • Set up and break down furniture, equipment, and materials for services, life cycle events, religious school, and meetings.
    • Ensure AV systems, lighting, and HVAC are functioning for scheduled programs.
  4. Safety & Security
    • Regularly inspect fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, and exits.
    • Ensure all maintenance practices align with safety codes and religious sensitivity.
  5. Supplies & Inventory
    • Track maintenance and cleaning supplies inventory; notify supervisor when restocking is needed.
    • Assist in seasonal building preparations (e.g. winterizing pipes and landscaping, sukkah construction, etc.)

6. Support Religious School and other programmatic needs.


Specific Daily/Weekly Tasks

Daily:

  • Walkthrough inspection of entire facility.
  • Restocking restrooms and cleaning supplies.
  • Responding to urgent repair tickets.
  • Locking/unlocking building per schedule.

Weekly:

  • Test HVAC system settings and thermostats.
  • Minor repairs such as paint touch-ups, door alignment, fixture replacement.

Monthly:

  • Clean gutters and exterior spaces.
  • Test fire alarms and emergency lighting.
  • Assist with large event logistics (e.g., Shabbat dinners, B'nai Mitzvahs, Days of Awe).

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or certifications a plus.
  • 2+ years in general building maintenance or facilities support.
  • Knowledge of basic HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work on ladders, and operate basic power tools.
  • Respectful understanding of Jewish customs and calendar preferred.
